Bunn My Cafe Review & Giveaway

With the new thing being single serve coffee makers I am in love.  I prefer to be able to make a cup of coffee or a cup or tea through our coffee makers rather then making a whole pot I know is going to end up dumped down the sink.  Lee loves his coffee of all varieties where as I am a tea drinker so our household is split and before we would end up with lots of waste.

When I was at the Housewares show in Chicago this past March I had the pleasure of meeting the fabulous people of Bunn and learning about their company and coffee makers.  Did you know that Bunn has been making coffee machines since 1957, I know right that is a long time to be in the coffee business so they clearly know what they are doing and keep doing it right.  I can remember my mom owning a Bunn machine when I was just a small child and her love for that coffee maker.  I had never owned a Bunn myself, just because I was always given our machines and never thought to buy one since ours worked what I thought was perfectly OK.  Turns out I think we were wrong and we were missing out on some awesome coffee brewing.

We recently received the My Cafe for review and since Lee and I are diverse hot beverage drinkers in that he prefer coffee and I do the tea thing.  The My Cafe understands not everyone drinks coffee and has mastered the ways in which you can make a perfectly steeped cup of tea.  With the My Cafe you can even make some iced coffees, keep on reading I will tell you in a bit how to do that.

With the My Cafe you brew one cup of coffee at a time by simply filling your desired coffee cup with water, pouring it into the machine in the water tank, popping in the coffee pod and hit start.  If you want  a stronger cup of coffee or a perfectly brewed cup of tea you can hit the pulse button which makes a bolder cup of coffee.  It takes 30 seconds to brew the perfect cup of coffee, 50 seconds to brew a cup of tea.  I love that it takes it time with the tea so that I can have a perfectly strong cup of tea instead of colored water.  When I took this review on I was concerned that I would have a hard time finding the pods for us to brew our coffee but that has not proved to be a problem at all and I can even brew my favorite tea bags through this if I am not looking for a specialty type of tea at that particular time.

The My Cafe has a stainless steel heating tank which heats the water to about 200 degrees F for the perfect brewing temperature each and every time.  The jet action sprayhead showers the grounds fully and evenly to extract the perfect flavor from the pod for each and every cup of coffee.

Remember before I told you about Iced Coffee, well Bunn provided me with directions to brew the perfect cup of iced coffee each time and I want to share them with you.  With Summer officially here now I think that this is the perfect alternative to drinking a hot cup of coffee on a super hot day.  Lee really likes to make his own iced coffee through this machine, much more then I think he thought he would.

Tip #1: Start with making stronger coffee: As a general rule, you want to make your iced coffee brew double the strength of your normal coffee.  We recommend using the same quantity coffee you normally use and reducing the amount of water in half. Ice will significantly dilute the final cup, so you need to start with strong coffee in the first place to allow the flavor to stay strong and fresh. This is where My Café comes to the rescue!  My Café’s technology and the pod format allows you to have a more authentic coffee or tea experience- enjoy the aroma before the brew and extract more flavor than other single-serve systems.  You can easily customize your flavor and make the coffee or tea stronger, perfect for your iced drink of choice.  You can select from an incredible variety of coffee or tea pods.  Plus, you can adjust brew strength by the amount of water you use- try starting with 4 ounces of water and a 10 gram pod. For stronger coffee or tea use My Café’s pulse brew option! Voila, coffee strength as you like it!

Tip #2: Add sugar while the coffee is hot: Sweeten the coffee while it’s hot, or the sugar won’t dissolve and will end up in a clump at the bottom of the glass. While it’s still hot, stir in your desired sugar amount.  When you’re making your different variations of iced coffee, try adding spices such as cardamom or cinnamon to the coffee after it brews.  A dash is all that you need!  You can also consider adding almond extract, vanilla, chocolate or raspberry syrup after the coffee has brewed for even more flavor.  Or, just keep it simple but remember it’s your life, your coffee.

Tip #3: Chill carefully: Most drinking glasses cannot withstand large temperature variations. So pouring hot coffee into a glass and putting it in the refrigerator can actually cause the glass to crack! We suggest using a travel mug, as it’s more durable than glass and coffee cups.

Tip #4:  Brew coffee the night before: For frosty morning coffee, make it the night before and chill it overnight.

In the morning, pour your chilled coffee over a lot of ice and wait….. letting it sit for a minute to allow the ice to slightly melt.  You remember that saying, “all good things come to those who wait”?  Now, add a splash of cream if you prefer and stir very well!  Remember cream or milk is just fine but if you’re making iced coffee for guests, consider whipping up some heavy cream and adding a little confectioners’ sugar and cinnamon for a special touch.   Add a generous dollop to each guest’s glass and they’ll be calling you Julia!

Tip #5: Serve over coffee cubes:  Use coffee cubes instead of ice cubes so you don’t dilute the rich coffee flavor.  Simply pour left over regular brewed coffee into an ice cube tray and freeze.

Give it a final stir, and enjoy!
