I don’t usually take on book reviews, I just feel with my busy life I don’t often enough have the time to read an entire book to do a review. When I was offered this opportunity to review The Charge I will admit I wavered but I was quite intrigued by the subject of the book and so decided to move forward with the review.
I am not done the book yet partially because the kids don’t let me read long but mostly because I refuse to rush through it, I find it to be a very good book. Inspired by a car accident the author wonders if he lived, loved and mattered. This inspired the book which finds the author Brendon Burchard arguing that the only way to measurably improve the quality of your life is to learn to activate the 10 drives that make you human.
I have read through the five baseline drives and I have to say that the chapter that really spoke to me most and made me realize I needed to take charge and change the stuff in my life that I can but most of all accept the things I cannot. This chapter starts out talking about a young boy who sent a text to his ex girlfriend saying he had a gun and was going to shoot himself, to a swat team coming in, to Brendon coming in and talking with the kid.
It then continues to talk about connecting to people in our lives. We may have hundreds of friends on all the social networks out there but who are our real friends? Who could we call in an emergency, who would be there to help with our kids, meals, house keeping etc. if a real emergency were to arise?
I went through my social networks, made a list of those I knew I could count on and while the list was rather short I was able to smile because just knowing I have one person I could connect with left me feeling blessed. The connection I feel with this list of people, my family and most importantly my husband leaves me feeling very fulfilled in life. I have never been to the edge like the boy mentioned in this chapter but I am thankful that because of the love and support I have always felt I have never and god willing will never be.
