Maddisyn, the boys and I love to catch fireflies.  Everytime we go out to camp we wait until it gets real dark and then head out with our jars and I sit and watch the kids run around the yard catching fireflies and then coming up to show my their new little “friends” in the jar.  We take some time to talk about fireflies and why they light up and the kids watch them light up then we open the jars and let them out so that we can start all over again to catch them.  For the kids the most fun they have is catching the fireflies.  I found it very funny when Blake, my 10 year old, and my mother in law were discussing fireflies and the light from them one night and she was telling them how when she was a kid she used to go out and catch fireflies herself.  Now my mother in law is not old mind you but my smart little boy once said to her, “oh I know you just HAD to catch fireflies grandma because they were the only light you would have at night as a girl”.  We almost died laughing even my mother in law found it hilarious and still laughs about it to this day.

Maddisyn just started really understanding catching the fireflies this year and is also just starting to understand that she has to let them go so they don’t die in the jar because we want them to show off their lights all the time.  When I saw this My Pet Firefly from Gemmy I just knew I had to have it for her, a firefly she could keep forever how perfect.  After all Maddisyn is my little firefly and I knew this would thrill her to no end.

We received the blue firefly from Gemmy and Maddisyn could hardly wait to get it out of the box when we got it home, now it sits on the end table beside the couch until I get my desk setup and Maddisyn plays with it all the time giving the lid a little tap to make the firefly move around in the jar and light up, she is quite in love with it and I think we may get her another one this time in pink perhaps so that she has two pet fireflies.

My pet firefly would make a good desk decoration, night light, gift for kids and just all around entertainment for adults and kids.  It requires 3 AA batteries and is priced at approx. $14.99 and available at Kmart or Cracker Barrel.  My Pet Firefly comes in three colors blue, green and pink and they are all equally as cute although I think the green is the most realistic color of the three.
